I would like to add a radiator to our lounge but because of the concrete floor etc and long distance from microbore central heating I would like to consider an electric radiator as a cheaper option. Stay with me, the plumbing question is coming, I would prefer a more normal looking radiator and so what do people think about using a normal radiator with a heating element, similar to those used in bathroom dual fuel radiators? See the product at the bottom of the following web page

http://www.rads-direct.co.uk/acatalog/LADDER_MUTI_TOWEL_RAIL.html

My main concern is that would I be able to fill the radiator properly so that they was little or no air in it? Should I use oil rather than water? If using water would an inhibitor solution be enough to prevent any corrosion problems in this set-up?

I have also posted something in the electrics forum regarding the questions of just plugging this into a normal socket.

Thanks in advance for your considered opinions :D

Get a proper storage heater fitted !!

Why would you want a towel rail in your lounge anyway?

By the way do you sweat alot for a fat lady? ... sorry had to ask :D

Yeah, but storage heaters are ugly, I want to put in a normal radiator which will match my others and use an electric element in it. There are commercial versions available but they are about £400.00 for a 600mm sqaure radiator.

Thanks and no I do not sweat much for a fat lass, thank you for asking.

Hi Scatmanjohn, everybody seems to be missing the point, it will be a normal radiator with an thermostatically controlled electric element in it. So will look just like a normal radiator. All I want to establish is that it is safe and legal to do it. The radiator and element will cost about £100.00 and one of those units you mentioned will be about £400.00 for a similar size!

Thanks

Have you considered an ordinary electric Flat Panel heater (not a storage heater)

Dimplex and others do them. Very slim.

the electric element fitted to towel rails is usually very low power (300 watts or so) and will not be much good at heating a room.

Forget it. It is not feasible.
In fact i think it would be potentially dangerous.

For performance and appearance and running costs I would strongly recommend you connect to your wet system.

Can you drop pipe connections down from upstairs>

A little tip with microbore, fit all the new pipework in 15 mm otherwise there will be insufficient flow through a long length of microbore.

I have never heard of a microbore system being used in Tanzania before. I am sure you look nice in your black and orange wrapper though.
