Electric v gas boiler

But crap modulation, hardly any options for setting it up for the system - can't even adjust the pump speed - and the OpenTherm doesn't work properly
modulation is sufficient for the vast majority of systems , setting system up you mean it does what it needs to , open therm like a lot of makes it depends on what controls you actually use to how good they work together

With the increase in electric charges the whole discussion. But interesting with

Does not affect me, no gas, but when you say OpenTherm doesn't work properly, is that just with that boiler or general?

As to crap modulation, not as bad as my oil boiler, but the big unanswered question is with most installations how much latent heat is really gained, and how much energy really is lost every time the boiler switches off and back on again?

Time is likely critical, my boiler will run for 20 minutes to heat DHW only, after 20 minutes even when set to 30 minutes, the boiler cuts out, and has not cooled enough to restart before the 30 minutes has run out.

Even after boiler has stopped, the heat from the boiler is still going to the DHW storage tank (C Plan) and with central heating running the boiler will normally fire for around 40 minutes bursts even when most the TRV's have turned off, longer when cold, and this boiler does not modulate.

Clearly some of the early wall thermostats which would start cycling off/on when getting near target temperature to reduce hysteresis would mess up a modulating boiler, however parents house boiler fitted by a firm specialising in fitting new central heating systems fitted a Worcester Bosch modulating gas boiler with a thermostat which did just that. 84067_P.jpg

Once the lock shield valves had been set and electronic TRV heads, the running cost was still far lower than my central heating, in spite being detached where my house was a semi.

So how important is the modulating in real terms?
