I didnt witness the event.. I was told that the energy saving bulb went with a bang and something flew out the light fitting. The fuse forthe lighting circuit also went.

Should the light fitting be investigated further or do these things blow like that?

Of course the fitting should be investigated, it might be damaged.

Low energy lamps should not fail like that, but it is not unknown for some cheapies.

Be careful though, the base of the lamp may still be in the lamp holder. If it is, turn the power off BEFORE you try and get it out..

At the circuit breaker not just the switch, as it may have been wired incorrectly.
