my uncle (who was a Board electrician) told me that during the war he came across one feeding the aircraft factory in Bristol that had boiled out its cooling oil and was starting to smell a bit hot
rather than cut power to the factory, he and his mate unstopped a can of oil and propped it above the entry hole, then scuttled back behind a wall in case it blew up.
