Re washing in softened water. You are probably correct about holding dirt in suspension however as less washing powder is used then that probably balances out.
Its well documented that harder water is more effective for rinsing washing but that seems not to be noticed except in commercial laundries.
I know of an Ideal CH501 boiler which is still in use for directly heating London water in a launderette. The water is not softened but the feed to the boiler is treated by a magetic device. The boiler has never been descaled since it was installed second hand about 1987 when the two Oil 60 kW Potterton Dips were removed. Hard work but the space released by the 600 gall tank made way for a new metal storage building.
