I have some done in lotus 123 - not sure if they will open in excel, never tried it.

I used to use Lotus, I'm pretty sure that the Excel installation includes a Lotus convertor - you may be able to switch it on using "Add/remove Programs" but it might ask for the Excel (or Office) installation disk.
MSWord also has lots of document converters but they are usually switched off.
p.s. I wonder if you could "print to file" and send the file?
