This was part of an email from Nest, but how would it know? The boiler only runs when the return water is cool enough, it does not matter if the thermostat is on, it is when the boiler runs that matters. With a modulating boiler, also how much modulated, so how would they know how I did?

That email is just a 'feature' so that people believe that connecting their thermostats to remote servers for spyware purposes is beneficial to them.
It's totally meaningless.

This is what I also thought. It was connected to the internet to use the geo-fencing, and to allow voice commands to adjust temperature. The geo-fencing was a failure, as far too close to home when it turns back on again, and no adjustment for distance.

The Nest Gen 3 was a failure, but left in circuit as a back-up, in the main Drayton Wiser does most of the control, but it does not turn DHW on, so Nest left connected to do that should the electric immersion heater fail. Since electric is cheaper, the oil is only a back-up.

But the email seems designed to make people think the thermostat is doing a lot more than it does.
