Engineered wood flooring is not a Structural floor, you would need floorboards/Composition boarding over the joists before the Engineered Wood could be installed as a 'finishing' floor surface.
One supplier said "18mm plus engineered wood floorings can be installed directly over joists". I think makes sense as 18mm engineered flooring is stronger than 18mm chipboard sub floor.

Isn’t that the beauty of the engineered bit stabilises it. But no I would not lay it straight on the joists and what about the ends they will be floating unless you put in noggins which would take longer than putting down a sub floor and if direct on joists then you loose the option of optimal running - to the light.
