We have a kitchen diner with 2 separate circuits of 6 downlights each. Each downlight has its own transformer, They are operated from a double dimmer switch, one for each circuit.

We have noticed that the lights in either circuit can dim unexpectedly. So one minute I am reading the paper in adequate light the next I am squinting as the lights have all dimmed.

Does this sound like a dimmer or transformer problem?

Can only be the dimmers as not all the transformer can be faulty.
Are the transformers electronic or toroidal?
Is the dimmer capable of dimming inductive loads(should say on the label)

is it a varilight dimmer switch?

put one in this week with very good (non varilight) trannys

Dimmer didn't work first time, took it off tried switch- all ok, put dimmer on worked for a few seconds, switched off then on. Stopped altogether.

phoned wholesalers (aah varilight dimmers- they only seem to work well with varilight trannys)

100VA dimming on 400 VA tranny should be dandy, but no! (with varilight)

Seriously NOT impressed.

I usually buy GET dimmers - no problems. Used MK and they are good

could be the pot is grotty on the dimmer if that type, whereby the wiper is intermitant in contact with the track and goes low and high resistance
