I an wanting to be able to switch an Ethernet cable on and off from a timer
Ideally I would like to use a plug in timer. so is there any 240v device that could switch such a cable on and off

that is exactly what i am wanting to do, so if you switch the power supply off to the switch (that to me just looks like a connector) then the data stops flowing ?You could buy a cheap Ethernet switch and plug the cable through this and then put the ac adaptor for the switch on a timer.
nothing to do with that - this is a camera system that plugs into the router, i need to disconnect the camera system from the internet during certain timesIf it's to stop kids, being able to browse, between certain times - Most routers, include that facility.

Most consumer grade devices can't add power to an ethernet cable, but it's common for commercial grade devices to use the standard so that a device that is capable of "power over ethernet" (like your camera)can run using just one cable (the same cable that does the networking, does the power-a bit like your smart phone- the data sync cable to the computer can also charge it).what these "Power over Ethernet (PoE) injectors" do , I really just want to make or break the ethernet connection

havnt got the foggiest, presumably the eight camera are all powered by the box with the recorder in it - this is not to be switched off and needs to keep on recordingSo… are your cameras powered using power-over-ethernet, or not?
I want to interrupt the Ethernet cable that goes from the recorder to the router. I know that pulling this stops the internet feed
