I dont think that is an accurate interpretation of the situation.
For 3 1/2 years, brexit has been sold as 'take back control'. Unfortunately the leave campaign only considered the UK taking back control.
But on 1st Feb 2020, the EU also took back control.
The EU is now a competitor to the UK, so it will negotiate to get the best deal for its 27 member states.
I would like to think Brexiteers would agree that the UK will act in its own interests and should therefore appreciate the EU will do the same.
