We came across similar scams when we applied for ESTAs to visit the States. Companies set up as agencies to 'handle all your problems' - which of course there are none if you use the official site and charge a considerable fee for the pleasure!

Don't go to Spain they don't honour it contrary to all EU regs. Actually just don't go to Spain its a bit of a dung hole.

My mum got stung for £20 last week by applying for the EHIC through one of the bogus sites. She did receive the card but it angered me that she needn't have paid for it.

Yes, it angered me too. That's why I think the problem should be made public.

Tell all your friends!

It is about time that all official government websites made themselves easilly identifiable to folk, perhaps by using a unique logo that is protected and will become universally identifiable.. It is easy to click onto a website and not know if it a government website or not.

A good start, I suppose, but I was thinking more along the lines of making the others illegal. Perhaps an easier alternative would be for the department that issues the cards to refuse to deal with the sharks.

Mind you, it occurs to me that they probably get a cut of the action.

When will people ever learn?

If you want details of services from public bodies then go through the 'direct.gov.uk' website.

It's too late complaining after the event!
