Hi we have had the alarm for about 10-12 years no probs, i knocked the mains of yesterday and the alarm reverted to the battery as it should but the alarm sounded till i switched the mains back on, could this be an indication that the battery is us. thanks

Probably ... They need replacing every 5 years , it may have damaged your panel if the battery is faulty the later ones had an inline fuse on the battery leads .

5 years, or before, if when tested correctly it is proved to be faulty.

One of 12mths. or even less can be faulty and still be showing 13.8v or so.

Don't forget that -

In a healthy battery.

Voltage is NO indication that there is any capacity (Ah) available, in the same way that fumes smelt in your car fuel tank is NO indication that petrol exists!
