I have 12 columns of data in an excel file.
How do I convert the data into a chart?

Not entirely sure what you’re asking, as we don’t know what data comparatives you have. Did you know there’s often a chart wizard which can help you with it?

Highlight the are of data that you want to use and click on one of the diagrams of your choice.
But you might have to play about with the axis, in so far as what data you want on what axis.

For instance, if you have number of something in one column, and dates in another column, you can swap which column is your x axis, and which is your y axis.

Sorry I can't help much more for now 'cos I'm going out now, and won't be back till late tomorrow.

But if you still need help then, i'll do my best.

This is one I just knocked up
It might be easier to highlight one set of values, e.g. Values in column A, then select from "Insert" select the line graph from the options

Choose the first one in the list to start with

This should give you a graph with your highlighted values and nothing more

Then you can play with selecting your other data ranges
Right click in the graph area, and you'll have a choice of selecting the data

Then you can play about with the data ranges and the labels.

To format the graph with additional info', click on the plus sign at the top right

And you'll get the panel at the left (depending on screen position of course) and as you use your pointer down the list of options, you'll see the differences it makes.

It'll probably take you some playing about with it to get familiar.
Then you can move onto more impressive presentations.
 
I've used excel charts quite a bit. I've found the setting of some things is buggy, eg you may be able to set somethig bt not unset it.

I keep a few charts in a spare file for copying, because they can be such a pain to set up.
 
Power Point is a lot easier for straightforward charts:

With a new page, click on Insert, then Chart. I selected a simple Line Chart.
You can create some values within Power Pont. Or you can use values from an existing Excel sheet, by Copying and Pasting each Column into the PowerPoint presented spreadsheet, which is what I did. It's probably possible to open a pre-existing Spreadsheet to use.

You can see how I am building the chart by selecting each column for the next set of values:
The A column is the X axis, and the subsequent columns become the Series on the Y axis. Each subsequent column becoming the next series.
