For my ch I have just put in an altec 18lt vessel kit with the air schraeder valve pointing up as it assembly says, but what I don't understand is how the air in the lower half of the expansion vessel which is connected to the ch water side is removed as you cannot bleed it, or maybe it doesn't matter?

The diaphragm has two purposes, one is so that the vessel can be filled with air to its pre-charge pressure.

The other is so that the air in the vessel does not gradually dissolve into the water over time. The air trapped under the diaphragm won't affect anything so no need to worry.
