Extending cheap webcam power leads - minimal power

Hi all

I have a pack of cheap webcams from ebay, the power supplied is around 5v / 5amps and works fine:

I need to extend the wire from the power bit to the webcam so I bought an extension lead to fit, and found there wasn't enough power going to the webcam! The extension lead was something like this:

Is it because the extension lead isn't powerful enough?

The easy way is to regulate at the web cam. It states "Power Power Supply DC 5V/2.0A" which is a little bit of a problem as one would want 5 volt ±5% or some thing like that to be able to work out how thick the cables needs to be over a set distance. Also the cable only states suitable for a list of web cams it does not state cable size at all.

It's like saying I have a 40W bulb is it big enough without saying what it is being used for.

USB is 5 volt and there are loads of 3A USB chargers which run off 12 volt. So a 12 volt DC power supply then long lead and USB charger to drop the voltage will likely get around the volt drop problem. But any other method thicker cable for example is a guess as it does not state the tolerance.
