Extending Decking to Cover Small Lawn

I am in the process of digging the small lawn so I can deck it to the existing deck.

I have dug channels around the edge for the outer frame and will dig smaller channels across.

I was planning on digging out a few inches of all the lawn but I have nowhere for the soil to go. Can I leave the digging and cover the grass and channels with weed cover in the hope it will die off, of do I have to dig it up.

This is my first attempt at a deck so want to get it right.

Any helpful advice would be most welcome.
