Hiya,

A friend has converted an old barn into 2 properties but the main gas supply onto the road is about 70m away from the properties.

He has been told it will costs many thousands to run the gas pipework from the road to the houses and would not be viable over other options suck as LPG, Electric, etc.

Is it possible to employ someone to dig the holes and install the pipework himself and have National Grid connect to the main supply and to the properties only to save on costs?

Who by? Generally ignore any information like that unless it's a quote from the actual supplier. Unfortunately the supplier has a monopoly so the quote doesn't need to be competitive.
When the estimator comes to do the quote it would be a good idea to discuss with them reducing the cost by doing some work yourself, as once the quote gets into the system it'll be with people who don't have authority to adjust it.
With new connections the may well be a factor included for reinforcing the network, if the existing network isn't quite up to scratch they would be reluctant to make things worse.

prices can be reduced once job is done they just cant go up seen loads reduced by hundreds after work complete

Good points by John, but is it a straight and easy run from the road etc to the house where you could dig the trench with a mini digger, or are there obstructions or problems with the route that would complicate the job.

Sorry Gas, how have they managed to get reduced afterwards; that's interesting.

because the job will have been priced on things like time and materials and when its closed down on computer it can be reduced if it wasnt as big a job as thought depending on what has been found underground

Many thanks for the responses.

Could you please provide a link to quote calculator?

No such thing, you need the estimator from the gas company to come and decide how hard it will be

Ian i i wonder how long he searched on google before deciding he thought he knew

Give the poor guy a break. Who threw feck came up with Cadent for a name? FFS, it's like renaming the NHS "Greengrocers R Us".

Really does make you wonder about people that work in offices.
