I have an Iomega 1.5TB USB External Hard Disk Drive. LDHD-UP2 is the number listed on the enclosure. It is a 3.5 inch drive with a power supply. It has been running well for a few years.

Today I plugged it in, and got the sound notification for a USB device, but the (white)light on the unit didn't flash the way it normally does.

It shows up in my computer for a split second and then disappears.

If I open Disk Management it shows up as removable disk F but says 'No Media'.

I have tried different USB ports and even a different laptop. Mine runs Windows 7, the other runs windows 8.

I have uninstalled the device from device manager and restarted my laptop. The USB bridge is found and installed but still no media is found.

Any ideas?

I am hoping that it is a problem with the enclosure or the USB bridge between the hard drive and the laptop but given that the bridge is found and installed, I am quite concerned that the drive might be dead and my files lost.

Take the drive out of the box and plug it into a SATA port.
If it works then, then you know which bit is faulty
