extractor fan in window pane

Hi guys. Im looking to get some secondary glazing, but the chap that came over said that - because the extractor fan sticks out quite a bit - it may cost more (becuase theyld have to build the frame further into the window sill). This got me thinking: I would like a slightly smaller extractor fan. Ive taken some photos of it - see below. Is it big becuase its old? Would I be better off buying a more modern (and presumably smaller) extractor fan? Would it be easy fitting the new extractor in, or would that require a new pane of glass? What should I bare in mind when looking for a new extractor fan? Apologies for all the questions, but I am new to this!

The other reason I wanted to get a newer/small fan is because I dont want to lose any of the window sill (which I would when they fit the secondary glazing).

It looks like a 6" diameter fan hence the larger body depth. Is there a reason that you cannot replace the window altogehter for a uPVC window and avoid secondary glazing ?

hi DAZB. Ild rather not get double glazing because I cant afford it, and because I need an extractor fan because the shower room mists heavily. I suppose I could ask them to make a double glazing window with an extractor fan in it, but I cant afford normal DG let alone custom made DG. Is 6" diameter a big size for an extractor fan? It does quite a decent job of removing steam. I wasnt sure whether modern fans have improved in technology and are smaller and more effective?

You could relocate fan to ceiling thru loft? or thru wall.
The fan size dictates it's efficiency smaller fans move less air unless they run much faster making more noise.
