i am replacing an existing extractor fan with one with a timer. The current unit is wired using twin and earth, as it doesn't have a run-on timer, and hence doesn't need the unswitched live feed.
My question is this - the new extractor is double insulated with no earth required. is it therefore acceptable to reuse the existing twin and earth to provide live, switched live, and neutral, with the earth core sleeved as live at both the extractor and the JB? I would use the earth as the switched live.

This seems technically sound to me, but are there good reasons not to do it this way? pulling a new 3 core and earth would not be straightforwards.

Thank you

NO... NOT acceptable

At some time in the future you or a new owner may do work on that cable and assume the bare copper "earth" wire is an earth when it is in fact a live wire.

It is a requirement that all fixed wiring has an effective CPC ( circuit protective conductor ) in all cables. The CPC is the bare copper "earth" wire.

marvellous - thank you for your reply.

I had a nagging suspicion that that would be the case, hence the query.

I'll swap the cable out.

Many thanks again.
