I think it is a lot more complicated than that. And it probably makes him an even more fascinating character. In his core business of property development, he had a pretty terrible reputation. He lost hundreds of millions of dollars, most banks wouldn't touch him and neither would most reputable business partners. But then came the Apprentice, where he played a reality TV version of a super successful property tycoon. Since then he has leveraged that fame to lend his name to many projects. He has a genius for self-promotion. In some ways he is more like a social media influencer than a traditional businessman. His recent wealth comes mainly from leveraging his fame and fanbase to launch a social media platform and that new digital currency.
