We have been quoted for the following work -

Plumber to supply and fit - new hot water tank (standard size), hot water pump to increase pressure throughout the house.

We supply and the plumber fits:

New shower tray (760mm), tiles, door and mixer shower.

We've been quoted GBP1,500 and we'll obviously have to pay for the bits we supply.

He reckons 3-4 days.

This seems expensive but I have no real yardstick against which to measure.

We asked another plumber to quote but he hasn't come back to us yet.

Any views?

Don't know your area of the country, but my standard day rate is £300 + VAT as a gas installer.

I haven't a clue how long tiling etc will take, but even an awkward HW cylinder change should take less than a day, about 5 hrs at worst.

do you think its ok?

did this bloke come recommended?

What made you second guess him by asking a shed load of strangers whether he is ripping you off?

Have you had other quotes?

Hooray! It's a topic about pricing. :D

I think you should cough up the GBP1,500 - my price would be on million pounds.

not a plumber, but say £200 for parts.

£1200 divided by 4 days work = £300 a day = £37.50/h

i dont know how much plumbers are in your area, but i would pay £200 a day.

get another quote, always the best way.

By hot water tank i take it you mean cylinder =£150 avg
As for hot water pump, these are usually only fitted to showers , but a good one to boost the whole house would cost at least £300 .Then there is the fittings he will req , so his labour rate will be about £ 1000 max, unless he is fitting a cheap pump.

I'll charge two million pounds (and subcontract the work to Softus)

Seriously though, get a few quotes and use recommended people if possible

Might be cheaper to get a tiler to do the tiling bits and the plumber to do the plumbing bits .... but more hassle doing it that way

Where do you buy your 36 x 18 cylinder for £150 inc vat?

Tiling is usually about £25-£30 per m² including adhesive but excluding tiles!

Interesting that Telford doesn't list "Sx Heating & Plumbing Suppliers Ltd." as being a stockist.

Are they hot water cylinders, perchance?
