Hi

I have to put in two false ceilings in two tall rooms lowering them from about 3 metres high to 2.4. They both have a flat roof above which is insulated and not traffic above. I don't want to go metal so I thought simply putting in joist brackets at 600mm centres, 4x2 joists and 12mm plasterboard.

This will also enable me to replace the ghastly light fittings with lots of downlights......

Both rooms are 3.2mt wide.

Will this suffice ?

Thanks in advance

I would recommend on ceilings that the joist were spaced at 400mm centres if using 2400X1200 boards and at 450mm centres if using 1800X900mm boards. Would always use 12.5mm on ceilings.
The above method would help prevent the ceiling from sagging.
Also noggin out for bonded edge the of board, so that would be at 1200mm or 900mm depending which of the above boards are being used and start finding your levels and timbering out around the perimeter of the walls first.

Cheers PrenticeBoy, its a 7.2M long room so thats a lot of 4x2's.....

I used 600 spacing and ran timber up to existing ceiling in centre line to prevent sagging [or you can suspend with a strong wire, coat hangers are ideal and cheap].
