hi

first of all, please excuse my lack of mechanical 'know how'

i have a 1993 land rover defender, 2.5 n/a diesel.

once the engine is warm (after approx 5/10 minutes) there is a squeeling noise from the engine when accelerating.

if i stop and spray wd40 on the belts at the front of the engine the noise stops for approx 5 minutes

any idea what it could be?
is it anything simple that could need tightening/replacing?

thanks

check tension on belts, you should have about a quarter of an inch deflection when you press on the longest run. If the tension is o.k.
change the belts. That should cure it,if not,one of the pulleys will be worn to excess and will have to be changed.

Would suggest NOT spraying the belts - oil is more likely to make belts slip, and some oils will break down some rubber compounds, reducing the life of the belts.
Agree with jonny - sounds more likely to be a pulley that you are catching with wd40 when spraying the belts.
