Fantastic idea.

Another fantastic way I have come up with is that my greyhound will have it's own social media following. I am giving it a youtube and Instagram account where it will become an internet social media sensation, pretty much like me in that respect. It will have hundreds of thousands of followers and I will sell advertising space on its coats and on the amazing clothing that it will be dressed in. You will be able to follow its arrival and training on a daily basis. I am a bit like Simon Cowell to this greyhound where it will be assured of a huge following. I will update lots of pics on here too for those who do not follow social media so they won't be left out of its progress into stardom. It is going to have a wonderful life.

Another way I was thinking is to set up another savings account and put the money each month into that. Then use that money if needed, if we don't use it each year then the pot builds until it is needed, It may be a better option as the money would always be availble and if never used or only partially used then it isn't dead money. Something to think about
If you needed to spend £5k on vet bills, could you find it without borrowing or severe hardship? If yes ..

I’d be tempted to go for one year insurance and then reconsider at the end.

If my dogs insurance went above £800 p/a. I’d self insure

Insurance companies make profits. After paying for their fancy headquarters, staff wages, company cars, posh coffee and the rest. Otherwise they'd go bust. So they must pay out less than they take in. Therefore all policyholders must, on average, pay in more than they claim. Therefore, on average, you will spend less on vet bills if uninsured than you would spend on insurance.

From what I've heard, some insurers tend to cancel your policy or increase premiums massively if you make a claim, so you'll probably never win. It's a bit of a scam, sadly.

The only things we insure are our cars, as it's a legal requirement, and our house because we couldn't afford another if it burnt down. Besides that insurance is a waste of money, on average, if you have some money in the bank to cope with the unexpected.

I know someone with a Greyhound. I'd say they're more like cats than other dogs. Really chilled, mostly asleep and just like one big run every day. I also think (controversial!) that they're a bit dim compared to other dogs, they're not really interested in much other than dinner.

Most dogs will get excited if you talk silly at them and wave your hands around. Greyhounds will just look strangely at you.
