Hi,

I want to add a PIR security light at the back of my house, with a switch in the kitchen. I think it will be easier to get to the power circuits than the lighting circuit so I think a FCU off the ring main will be the easiest option.

I could do with some help on the following:

- What is the correct way of breaking into the ring main? (There's nowhere to spur from nearby). Will I need a junction box?
- What size/type cable should I run from the ring main to the FCU?
- What size/type cable should I run from the FCU to the light?

Thanks!
Matt

1) Fit FCU in accessable location
2) run 2.5 mm cable to the supply terminals from a junction box on the ring (reasonably accessable, eg loft, but not boarded over)
3) you could drop down a cable size now (to 1.5mm) but you may as well continue using 2.5mm, in case anyone wants to use the fcu for something more powerful in the future, and it saves you buying two different sizes run a cable from the load terminals of the FCU to a flex outlet plate in the loft
4) run 3 core flex (0.75mm or larger) to the light from the flex outlet plate
5) fit a 3A fuse in the FCU

Remember to switch off the power
