Has the decking already been treated with something?
Fence paint doesn't last long as it is, and you need something very hard wearing, as you will be walking on it.
And rain will settle on it and make it lift.
And you need something with non-slip properties.
Do not use fence paint.

Thanks for the reply. I have treated the decking with some wood preserve this afternoon but the newer planks are obviously a different colour to the older wood. I will get some decking paint as you suggest.

You're better off using decking oil, specially formulated to deal with footfall and rainfall. Fence paint won't last a year or two. Ronseal is your best bet.
Thank you. I did use wood preserve that the previous owners of our house left behind. I got some Cuprinol decking paint from B&M in a deal and applied that on top. We are really pleased with the finish.
