I have two options to attach a fence post to the side of the house.
1. Use a 16mm rawl bowl. This will involve cutting a 16mm hole though my render in probably two places.
2. Dig up the concrete and sink in a post underground.

Obviously 2. will involve considerably more work and cost, but will mean I won't need to damage the render and would be much much waterproof.

So is it worth the far greater effort? Is the bolt likely to transmit water through even if I silicon around the top of the bolt?
Opinions welcome!

Assuming you have cavity walls I see no problem with using a 16mm anchor bolt as you will only be drilling into the outer skin. This gets wet anyway whenever it rains. It may be an idea to put a strip of DPM behind the post to reduce the effect of cross over from the post if it gets extremely wet in this weather.
