If you use the recovered stone you have, do wash it before using in your concrete. The 'Damp Mix' idea is very successful, just 'ram' (compact) it into the hole well.

Use half to one bag (depending how big your hole is) of postcrete per hole to fix them in place then fill the rest with a wetmix of concrete.

Best for timber posts is crushed rammed chalk.
