Can car engine oil be used for preserving fence panels?

Used engine oil mixed 50/50 with paraffin or diesel has long been used as a wood preservative. It is very effective, but there are now concerns about the possible toxicity of contaminants in used engine oil.
It would be used down the bottom of the garden where the sheds and compost bins are..No grass to kill and no slabs to stain.
The reason I would bother is because it is free..
