About 10yrs don't do it.
Must be a decent slate - why on earth don't you just strip and re-slate as it is the fixings that usually cause a slate roof to be a problem. Consider a diamond pattern in the roof slope if you need a few replacements but struggle with the colour, just make sure they are the right thickness to sit flat with what you have.
