I'm looking for the best way to match what's left of the existing wood to my new oak cappings.

The strings will need a bit of "wood coloured" filler in places, the cappings currently just have one coat of clear varnish.

get the carpet lifted and the wood rubbed back to see what you have

and why has there been a square flat cut in the carpet on each riser ?

Treads and risers are being clad so it's just the strings and remains of the newels I need to deal with.

The flaps were to access the risers to put wiring in for LEDs before I underboarded the stairs.
