I'm going to repoint a fireplace which I've opened up, but I want to understand the difference between regular cement and fire cement. Is there really any difference? As far as I knew regular cement was already pretty fire resistant. Or will the heat of a fire eventually cause some issues if I don't use the 'correct' stuff?

I wouldn't use fire cement for repointing brickwork. Lime mortar could be used.

I didn't realize gases from combustion would damage regular cement.

If lime mortar doesn't have such an issue, I'll use that.
