I'm going to repoint a fireplace which I've opened up, but I want to understand the difference between regular cement and fire cement. Is there really any difference? As far as I knew regular cement was already pretty fire resistant. Or will the heat of a fire eventually cause some issues if I don't use the 'correct' stuff?

As long as it's hydraulic lime. Most of the cheaper bags of lime you see in the stores is non-hydraulic.
