One of the defences, or it was a joke. Who knows what happened to the perpetrator. Welcome to the 1970sOr workplace banter.

I don’t agree with sacking somebody for using the word fireman,

He wasn’t sacked for that, you’ve fallen for the spin
Not when you speak to those that work in the fire service.Yes but most people still say fireman,
No one does, in house. The term hasn't been used for decades. Letters, emails, chatter, correspondence etc, the term simply is not used amongst colleagues. You would have to consciously make an effort to use the term now, hence 'read the whole story'. Have you read the whole story?Don't say fireman for god sake....
Hey Nosey, you'd be in trouble if you worked for Essex County Council. About 8 years ago, mrs motties sister worked for them. A bloke in her office received a written warning for saying "Boyo" to a Welsh colleague. It wasn’t even the Welsh bloke that complained, he had no problem with it and said so but that counted for nothing! No one does, in house. The term hasn't been used for decades. Of course ive read it, my take is that hes a very good firefighter but a rubbish supervisor, he should have been demoted, I blame the people in offices above him.No one does, in house. I saw him as a great supervisor as he was ignoring the ridiculous complaint in the first place. Should someone who is so offended by the term fireman be working amongst a group of blokes who are firemen, terminology is not something that would offend me so much as to make complaints over it, she left the fire service after this and claimed a substantial amount in damages. This man was more upset than her.Of course ive read it, my take is that hes a very good firefighter but a rubbish supervisor, he should have been demoted, I blame the people in offices above him.

Good point, I suppose it would be like a male nurse being offended at being called a nurse?I saw him as a great supervisor as he was ignoring the ridiculous complaint in the first place. There's some very prejudiced people amongst us

Exactly. If she didn't like the term fireman then maybe look elsewhere for a job. I doubt that firefighters or firemen are such delicate flowers that they say this common term with any malice or intent.Good point, I suppose it would be like a male nurse being offended at being called a nurse?
