i have an inlaid gas fire the ones with fake coals, can i take the gas part away and put in an open coal fire , my real problem is that it is not the solid fire bricks at the back but some other material which looks like brick asbestos or something, not sure. thanks .

i had a coal fire years ago and its shaped the very same
 
sorry mat ,yes it is shaped like that . just not sure if it would take the heat of a coal or log fire

You also need to check the flue is suitably rated for solid fuel, gas flue liners are not normally suitable.
