I've got an old 50/60's fireplace surround that needs smartening up but the tiles look like they maybe non porous. Any ideas about what undercoat/paint I could use?

I suspect these surrounds will come back in fashion, then you will see them on TV Makeover programmes, with some young lady advising householders to strip off the paint, and reveal the original beauty underneath.
