I am planning to make a fireplace surround. Could somebody please tell me if using MDF would be a wise idea? If not what should I use?

Thanks in advance.

surely mdf will catch fire?

As would ALL wood products when exposed to fire. It would all depend on how far away it would be from the heat source.

should be ok for a normal fire surround but you can get fire retardant mdf if your unsure
