If I highlight a piece of text within my post and click on any of the text editing buttons to wrap tags (italic/bold/underline/quote), it just inserts the opening tag right at the end?

When using IE I can highlight a line of text and do what I want with it. In firefox I've either got to type in the tags manually or actually remember to hit the button before I want to type the line...

Is there a way round this?

I also have this issue in IE7. Doubt there is a way round it - probably down to the java version used by both web apps.

I just cut a paste the correct tags to the right places.

Install this extension. for Firefox. Once it's installed, highlight the post's text, right-click on it and go into the 'bbcodeXtra' menu.
