Hi, this old fireplace (terraced 1950s house in UK) had a back boiler and gas fire which was professionally removed. That pipe goes nowhere. I want to just tidy everything up and put flowers in there or something, don't need a fire.

I first want to check the brickwork is safe. I guess when the gas appliances were installed they had to hack an awful lot of the bricks out, so that now it's really just the front single skin of bricks holding all the load and there's really no connection to the main wall. You can see the bricks on the right face of the breast are just loosely shoved in there as filler, they can't be contributing much.
