We have a 1930ish 3-Bedroom detached Bungalow.

It had a fairly traditional fireplace, which we have now removed as it had been molested anyway. We don't have a real need for an open fire anymore, but don't want to lose the feature. So.....

We want to convert the existing opening to a simple rendered arrangement with a modern feel and have a small/medium sized fire-basket or similar in there, in which we may periodically burn wood.

We feel that the opening is too big and it has an arch-shaped brick 'lintel'. We plan to have a brickie reduce the size of the opening. Behind a single-skin chimney breast, the chimney itself is very open. We figured that we may line it, but are unsure whether the opening needs a 'Gather-hood' to reduce the size of the void space and provide a spigot to take the liner.

Any help appreciated!!

the flue needs to be no less than 15% of the opening.a gathering hood is preferable.
