Hi

Does anyone have any questions about the Firestone RubberCover epdm system. Happy to give any technical advice on the product or fitting.

Ha. Nice job :D

We have a kitchen extension, built 5 years ago with a flat roof and torch-on felt system. It appears to be leaking. The size is around 4m X 3m. Is this normal for felt-type systems? I have little faith in the (now-extinct) builders that did it. Would an EPDM system be suitable? What sort of lifetime could I expect? Are there guarantees?

Thanks.

Its not normal for a felt roof to leak after 5 years, if workmanship is good you should get 20 years. If it has failed it is due to the workmanship not the system per se.

Lifespan of an Epdm rubber roof system will last in excess of 50 years if installed correctly. I guess the beauty of this system is that the sheet would be in 1 piece so there are no joints to fail.

Matter of opinion I guess. 1 billion square meters installed globally can't be wrong. What do you say?

I say its pig ugly. Like most flat roof finishes.

1 billion square meters installed globally, what's your point?

My point is - it's becoming a popular choice for waterproofing that is growing. In 2003 felt was 70% of the market. In 2014 it's stands at 59% market share. Single plys are becoming more and more used in flat roof applications. Dont get me wrong there are some good felts out there, but times are changing. Not just flat roof materials, all building materials.

There are millions of square meters of flat roofs already out there and they need water proofing.

I agree with you, a pitch roof looks better but you cannot always get the pitch required on alot of domestic extensions
