Is it a bad idea to tackle glossing ? I have a room that needs 3 doors and all the facings glossed white, but I've been advised that its more trouble than its worth.....how hard can it be ? I can handle normal emulsion okay.

It's tricky. Use an oil undercoat, sand back lightly then a liquid gloss top coat. If the brush drags - thin it a little until it flows. Do it fast and don't over brush it.

Just to add if you do thin oil based paint make sure you thin it with white sprit and not water.

You may like to try non-drip gloss, ideal for doors if you're not used to painting them.

Have you considered eggshell.

It is lower sheen and hides more of the imperfections. It is much easier to work with and is less prone to drips and runs.

What ever paint you go for buy a decent brush (wooster or purdy) and make sure that it is trade quality. trade paint might cost a bit more but it will cover better and be easier to work with.

DIY sheads are a no no. Pop down to you local independant trade merchant, at least he is likely to know the products that he sells.
