Should the back metal box not also be earthed with a link to the earth connection on the socket? This ensures the box is earthed when the screws are removed from the front of the socket (these screws connect to the earth terminal through the holes in the front of the socket)

yes it should, as the screws that hold the socket on should not be relied upon for a good connection
