Fitting a WC pan connector

Simple question:

I find the soil stack end of the WC connector hard to push in to the soil pipe. Sould I be using some sort of lube on the rubber flange?
 
Thanks for that I'll give it a go.
I'll have to rely on my muscles to pull the old one out! :wink:
