Hi,

Please be gentle this is my first post.

I'm looking to fit a light in my loft and wanted some help and advise from people who know what they're doing. I've bene up in my loft and found where I think the lighting circuit comes in (see pictures). I feel a complete noob for asking, but how would I go about connecting a switch and light so I can illuminate my roof without a torch.

You need to find a permanently live lighting circuit cable, and use the info here: //www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:lighting. You'll need to understand exactly how, what, and why you're going to connect up before you start.
You'll probably need a junction box, a 1-gang switch and a batten lamp holder of sorts.

Who installed that white cable (left bits of insulation lying around as evidence), and did not enclose the choc-block? That wants putting right pronto.

No idea who did that. The house was built in 2001 and we moved in May of this year.

Is it simply a case of finding the correct cable, breaking into it and fitting the junction box as a spur off the cable?

I suspect for this one I will ask a friend or family member who is more aware of how electrics work.

It's likely you have a loop in method on the lighting circuit, if you can follow the cable to the last looped in light you can take a feed from there without breaking in to the circuit or have lots of cables at light previous to the that.
The last light on the circuit will have two sets of cable one for the supply and the second for the switch.
Then if you can follow the diagram using you loft light as the next in circuit.
