fitting new thermocouple to my gas boiler

Can anyone make clear the rules on changing the thermocouple on my boiler, I don't have to touch any of the gas connections, To change it i only
need to unscrew it from the gas valve and feed it into a hole into the pilot light.
I have changed it before on quite a few occassions but my neighbour tells me im not allowed to do it.
