Fitting Service Valves

Hello Everyone.
I am trying to fit service valves. I am not sure which side recieves the water. There is a small arrow on the side of the valve. Which way should it point: up or down? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Al-Glasgow. Thanks for your prompt reply. The cold pipe is connected to the mains and the hot to a combi boiler, both ending in the kitchen sink tap.
