Which Way Around to fit Radiator Valves

I am plumbing in some additional radiators and would like to clarify which way around the valves should go. Does the check valve go on the side where the water goes into the radiator or the side where it flows out? I have been trying to clarify, but have read some guides which say to fit it to the inlet and others which say the opposite.

The plan is to fit some Tado smart radiator thermostats to them, if that makes any difference.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

1. Its traditional to fit TRVs to the flow (water in), and lock shield valves (not check valves, they are a different thing) to the return (water out).
2. With modern bi-directional valves it doesn't really matter which valve goes on which side.
3. TRVs sense the room's air temperature, not the radiator's water temperature. For this reason it is best to attach the TRV to the side which can best sense room temperature. For example, if one side of a radiator is in a corner, fir the TRV to the other side.

In addition to @oldbuffer advice. I recently decorated a house that had rads that had stickers saying flow/return at either end. They were the "old school" type of rads.

Ideally the sensing head should stick out horizontally to better sense the room air temperature.

But that looks odd so it is rarely done.

That is because they have baffles fitted and are direction sensitive, many fancy vertical designer rads are the same
